To the Front Lines at Seventeen — The Habib Battalion & Meeting Soleimani (1987–1988)

Immediately after graduating in 1987, the seventeen-year-old Mojtaba joined the IRGC and was sent to the front lines of the Iran–Iraq War. He was assigned to the “Habib ibn Muzahir Battalion” of the 27th Mohammad Rasulullah Division. In the same battalion were Qassem Soleimani, Hossein Hamedani, and Hossein Taeb — men who would go on to command the IRGC. This was the origin of the “Habib Circle” — the network of loyalties that would ultimately push Mojtaba to the position of Supreme Leader.

He took part in multiple operations including Operation Beit ol-Moqaddas 2, Operation Dawn 10, and Operation Mersad — the final major land battle of the Iran–Iraq War, in which Iranian forces crushed an Iraqi-backed MEK incursion near the city of Mehran on the western border. One account records that Mojtaba and other sons of officials went missing at one point during the recapture of Mehran — but they later resurfaced.

2005 & 2009 Presidential Elections — The Kingmaker Behind Ahmadinejad

In the 2005 presidential election, the obscure hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad surged as a dark horse in the final days. The losing reformist candidate Mehdi Karroubi wrote an open letter to Ali Khamenei accusing Mojtaba of mobilizing IRGC and Basij mid-level commanders to engineer votes for Ahmadinejad. His father denied the allegation, but the suspicion never disappeared.

On March 3, Iran International reported that the IRGC was pressuring Assembly of Experts members through “in-person meetings, phone calls, and psychological and political pressure” to vote for Mojtaba. Eight members announced a boycott. The assembly building had been destroyed in airstrikes. An online session was held anyway. On March 9, the Assembly of Experts elected Mojtaba as the third Supreme Leader.
